Policies, Terms and Conditions

Tuition Tax Credit:
CASTI is a certified educational institution approved by the Minister of Human Resources and Social Development Canada. Accordingly, students may claim the fees paid to CASTI for purposes of the Tuition, Education and Textbook Tax Credits provided that all appropriate criteria for eligibility have been met. Contact the Canada Revenue Agency to inquire about your specific eligibility.

CASTI offers discounts to individuals who register in multiple courses. The same individual must be attending all courses within the 2010 calendar year to qualify for a discount. Discounts are based on descending value of courses - highest priced course is paid in full, additional course registrations will receive a 5% discount.


Continuing Education Units (CEU):
CASTI has been approved as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), 8405 Greensboro Drive, Suite 800, McLean, VA 22102. In obtaining this approval, CASTI has demonstrated that it complies with the ANSI/IACET Standards which are widely recognized as standards of good practice internationally. As a result of their Authorized Provider membership status, CASTI is authorized to offer IACET CEUs for its programs that qualify under the ANSI/IACET Standards.


1 CEU is equal to 10 contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction. Only IACET Authorized Providers, who undergo a strict evaluation by continuing education peers, can award the IACET CEU.

Note: Prior ASME code experience is recommended before taking this course. For individuals without prior ASME code experience, it is recommended that the CASTI Introduction to Pressure Equipment Codes or CASTI ASME Section IX - Welding Codes and Metallurgy course be taken in advance.

Objectives:
To achieve the AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification, and by reciprocity, also achieve the CSA W178.2 Welding Inspector Certification Level 2 that is managed by the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB). It is also the objective of this course to prepare exam candidates to write the ASME code endorsement exam as part of the CWI certification.

Online study is an integral part of this training course. Exam candidates must be prepared to complete all elements of this training course in order to maximize the chances for successfully passing the examination.

Online study components include:
  • study material for reading
  • reviewing example problems and detailed solutions
  • solving practice problems and reviewing detailed solutions
  • practice problems results are graded to provide a measure of self-evaluation
Prior to the course start date, the online study modules are made available to individuals registered for this CASTI exam preparation course. Completion of these online modules is a mandatory part of this training course (see Guarantee Policy below). All exam candidates are encouraged to register early and allow sufficient time to complete these online study modules.

Accreditation:
Each participant will receive a certificate with 4.8 Continuing Education Units accredited by the International Association of Continuing Education and Training (IACET).

Who Should Attend:
Inspectors, technologists, engineers, or experienced welders and welding supervisors who are involved in new welding fabrication, repairs, alteration, or inspection of welded pressure equipment. It will also assist API 510 and 570 inspectors who plan to challenge the CSA W178.2 practical exam to become a Level 2 inspector. Topics:
This course has 3 parts:
I) ASME Code Clinic (1-1/2 days)*
II) Welding Inspection Fundamentals (3 days)
III) Practical Visual Inspection Workshop (1-1/2 days)
(Optional Evening Tutorial Sessions)

I) ASME Code Clinic (1-1/2 days):
This portion of the course will prepare exam candidates to write the 2-hour ASME code endorsement exam that includes:
- ASME Section IX
- ASME B31.1
- ASME B31.3

II) Welding Inspection Fundamentals (3 days):
This portion of the course will prepare exam candidates to write the 2-hour Fundamentals exam and includes the new updated AWS Welding Inspection Technology (WIT) text book and workbook with over 500 sample exam questions. The WIT text book modules that will be covered include:
1. Welding Inspection and Certification
2. Safe Practices for Welding Inspectors
3. Metal Joining and Cutting Processes
4. Weld Joint Geometry and Welding Symbols
5. Documents Governing Welding Inspection and Qualification
6. Metals Properties and Destructive Testing
7. Metric Practice for Welding Inspection
8. Welding Metallurgy for the Welding Inspector
9. Weld and Base Metal Discontinuities
10. Visual Inspection and Other NDE Methods and Symbols

III) Practical Visual Inspection Workshop:
This portion of the course will prepare exam candidates to write the 2-hour Practical exam and includes the AWS Visual Inspection Workshop reference manual with sample examples questions. Topics covered include:
- Terms and Definitions
- Introduction to Visual Welding Inspection
- Weld and Base Metal Discontinuities
- Measurements of Welds

This workshop includes two practice exams, using similar sample weldments and measuring instruments to simulate the actual 2-hour practical exam.

Required Code Documents:
All participants must bring the ASME Sec. IX-2007, B31.1-2007, and B31.3-2006 to the class. These code documents can be purchased as a package from CASTI (see below).

Purchasing Code Documents:
The CWI ASME code package is available to CASTI course registrants at an educational discount price. These documents are available as a package only, not on an individual basis. Note: only the specific portions of the three ASME codes required for the exam are supplied in this code package

CASTI Exam Preparation Guarantee Policy:
Customers who are unsuccessful in achieving a passing mark with the AWS CWI exam after taking the related CASTI course will be offered a 50% discount to retake the same course again, provided all of the following requirements are met:
  • All of the pre-classroom online modules were fully completed and all answers submitted online prior to the start of in-classroom training.
  • 100% attendance at the classroom training.
  • 100% attendance at the pre-exam review day.
  • All of the post-classroom training is fully completed and all answers submitted online prior to the exam date.
  • This offer is limited to the first available course where seating is available.
Final approval for registration under the CASTI Exam Preparation Guarantee Policy is given at the sole discretion of Codes and Standards Training Institute (CASTI).

About the Instructors
Richard J. DePue is the Lead Auditor and QA/QC Inspection Manager of Certified Welding and Testing with over 27 years of welding related experience. Some of his responsibilities include conducting and coordinating visual and NDE inspections, AWS welding inspector training, and project surveillance/auditing activities. He holds a M.Sc. Degree in Technology Education Administration and is a AWS Senior Certified Welding Inspector, AWS Certified Welding Educator, AWS Certified Radiographic Interpretation, NY State Public School Certified Teacher in Metal Trades, ASNT Level III - MT, PT, VT. Mr. DePue started his technical career as a welder in 1981 and in concert with his formal education and many technical certifications, he enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience throughout his training courses.

John E. Bringas, P.Eng. is a professional engineer who has practiced metallurgical engineering and inspection for 31 years. He is one of only 22 people in the world certified as an API 510, 570, 653, 571, 577, and 580 inspector. He is also an AWS Certified Welding Inspector and former CGSB certified NDE inspector in UT and RT. He is a long time committee member of ASTM A01 (Steels), A05 (Coated Steels), B02 (Nonferrous Alloys), NACE STG 32 (Oil and Gas Production-Metallurgy) and STG 36 (Process Industry-Materials), SAE Division 1 (Carbon and Alloy Steels), and Canadian Representative on ISO TC 17-SC 4 (Steels). He is the author of the ASTM Handbook of Comparative World Steel Standards and the CASTI Metals Data Books. Mr. Bringas has engineering work experience in the steel making, foundry, consulting, refinery, pipeline and petrochemical industries and is the founder of Codes and Standards Training Institute and CASTI Publishing Inc.
